Mposa

Made it safely to Mposa yesterday and it is like something out National Geographic here. We are staying in a place overlooking the Shire River and we’re on the lookout for hippos. Internet is tough to get except for the small amount we are the ADP office, so expect sporadic updates and today’s has a generic photo from last week. Sorry! :)

Had an amazing first day here in Mposa. The ADP project Manager Dan has been nicknamed “Dan Obama” because he’s an amazing leader. I honestly can’t believe how much they have already done in one year. It is stunning to me how well progressed they are for an ADP so new. The project is using a new model and focusing on children under age 5 for this first year. The philosophy is that if they can intervene early and prepare kids for school, they will succeed and be more likely to stay in school. We visited a pre-school this morning and as a preschool EA, I was blown away by the way these children are being prepared for school. EVERY aspect of preparation that Canadian children get was visible: Fine and gross motor skills, numbers, letters, months of the year. These vibrant, amazing kids were being given a fighting chance and success and it made me so thankful.

Been a few adventures today – first Colin changed the tire of our landcruiser in the middle of nowhere. We must have gone over a nail or something and he had us back on the road in 15 mins. His reputation as MacGuyver is alive and well. ;)

Then after lunch, we had 2 child visits. It was announced to us, non-chalantly, that our visits were 40 mins walk from the nearest road. This wouldn’t have been a big deal, except I should remind you it is +36 in the shade and 90% humidity. So after a brief, teary moment of panic, I donned a floppy hat with polar bears and we headed off with a team of interpretors. Turns out it was about 4K or 20 mins to the first house across single track roads with 7 bridges in the middle of the mountains. We pounded back the water and it went quickly. When we arrived, the families met us on the road singing and seeing how thankful they were to have us made it worth it. We visited two wonderful children sponsored by friends back in Canada – Shamida (Johanna’s) & Mishek (Jacqueline’s). They were very grateful and I can’t wait to show you the footage!

Our love to everyone- please pray about the fuel shortage here- things are really bad and Dan is going hunting tonight for some to get us through Wed, Thurs and Friday. Water is also dwindling with the heat, so
