Take 52 Week #28: Wide
My friend Julie is one of my nearest and dearest, so it was delightful to me to see our daughters strike up a strong friendship as they grew. Over the years, I’ve lost track of the number of times Christiana has slept over, come to camp or hung with us. Having her as our “third kid” is easier than having just two kids. She is gentle, obedient, and I have seen choices that I am so happy she emulates to my children. She is unconditionally loving and when Kylie is having a tough day, it’s Chrissy she asks to call.
Chrissy just graduated from Grade 12 and is headed off to University in the fall. It’s an eventuality we all knew was coming, but still isn’t easy to watch as a Mom with a girl a year behind. So as I ponded what to buy her as a grad gift, I had a “eureka” moment. Instead of a monetary grad gift or other token, I told her I wanted to give these two girls more experiences together. We hope to manage a trip to see her at school in the fall, and Monday I bought the girls coffees and scones to share. When I turned around from my visit with Julie a little while later, their smiles wide and eyes sparkling as they enjoyed each other’s company, I knew the gift of time is so much better than any other gift.
I love this picture because it captures what is evident in life – how dear these two are to each other. The amazing thing is, this is how they look after they spent over half an hour on the phone (and heaven only knows how many texts) the same morning. They literally delight in one another’s company. It’s what every mother can only dream of for her daughter to have. I watch my daughter light up and almost jump out of her skin with excitement when her friend walks in the same room. This picture is unposed, which is almost unheard of with teen girls (specifically mine), which is what makes it particularly precious. In a cafe whose walls are all glass the lighting was easy, so all I had to do was be stealthy when I hit the shutter.
The world is widening for these two beautiful girls. So we cherish the gift of time.
