Don’t Be Shy
Take 52 Week #41: Shy
The irony of this week’s theme is that shy and introverted things generally don’t like their picture taken. So I got a little brainwave and decided to try a twist of irony for this week’s subject. I wanted to attempt photographing something that you would expect to be shy, quiet and introverted, but secretly had an attitude.
So in the vein of Toy Story, where the figures lay in a drawer until their owner is away and they come to life, I set up a scenario of this cheeky little dude stealthily shutting me down.
I think it might have been more compelling if I had posed my hands as though I was still using the laptop, I’m not sure. I like the way the silver of my computer catches the light, and combined with the screen-tilt creates a visual tunnel that draws your eye to his scheming face. And I like the way his snarky expression reflects in the screen.
I’m not sure how effective it was, but it was fun to fiddle with an inanimate object, especially after last week. There is no asking anyone to sit still or calm down, and the onus is on me to try different angles and techniques to tell a story. Since I was limited to the stash of my son’s lego figurine heads and bodies, this one with the raised eyebrow seemed to have the most character. And he wasn’t Star Wars related, which is particularly hard to find at our house.
